A recipe for healthy moroccan lentil soup that can be pre-made and packaged in a jar. Just add water or stock for a meal in one that you can gift to friends and family or enjoy on your own. You can make as is or package in a jar for gift giving!
You know those cold, winter nights when you get home from work and the last thing you want to do is cook? Well this soup is a life-saver because you literally dump the contents of the jar into a pot, add 7 cups of water and you have a complete meal! It is THAT easy. I love making these soup in a jar as gifts for family and friends – I can assure you that they will be so grateful to have a quick and easy meal in the cupboard!
Soup has always played that life-saving role for me. Whether it be from a jar, the freezer or straight from the pot, when I’m hangry and lazy it’s soup that I turn to.
Without a doubt, this habit is something I inherited from my Mom. As I get older I’ve discovered how few people grew up on soup. When I say that there was soup at almost every meal we ate, I’m not kidding. I think my Mom knew that one of the best ways to get us to eat our veggies was in soup and damn can that lady make a good soup!
Traditionally, she’d make a huge pot (seriously the woman has the biggest pot on the planet!) of soup and freeze it into individual-sized servings, but I think I may be onto something with the soup in a jar trend. Even though you literally only add water, it kind of feels like you’re making the soup from scratch and so you not only get fresh soup, but productivity points too.
So give a gift that just keeps giving and pass along this DIY Moroccan Lentil Soup in a Jar. Or you know…make it for yourself…that’s cool too.
Ingredients in Moroccan Lentil Soup (in a jar!)
- red lentils
- dried onion flakes
- spices: garlic powder, cinnamon, coriander, turmeric, cumin, parsley, bay leaves, sea salt and pepper
It doesn’t get much easier than that. If you’re like me and keep every spice under the sun in your pantry, you might be able to whip up this meal without a trip to the grocery store!
What to Serve with Moroccan Lentil Soup
Because of the protein packed lentils in this soup, it’s super filling on it’s own but I love pairing it with some sides to really round out the meal. You can’t go wrong with a hearty loaf of bread – I love this sweet potato cornbread! Roasted vegetables like these brussels sprouts would be a great accompaniment and you also can’t go wrong with a side salad. This harvest farro salad is delicious as is this fennel pear and ricotta kale salad. You really can’t go wrong with this soup. Enjoy!

November 26, 2023 at 7:52 amThis looks great for a teacher gift! Quick question. It says red lentils and the jars look like red lentils, but the cooked picture at the bottom looks like yellow lentils? Is that a different soup? Wondering what the soup actually looks like after cooked. Thanks!

November 26, 2023 at 9:47 amOnce mixed with the spices and cooked it looks a little more yellow – but yes those are red lentils! Yellow lentils can easily be substituted if desired.

December 8, 2016 at 1:38 pmThis soup is fantastic! My kids don’t like it, but that’s par for the course. I was looking for a savory gift for teachers (one of them is gluten free), so this fits the bill. Thank you!

March 16, 2017 at 10:02 pmWhen you made it, did you use both the jars and 7 cups of water? Or is it 7 cups of water for 1 jar of ingredients?
Karen Robison
March 17, 2017 at 9:20 amIt’s 7 cups for one jar, but I remember thinking I might use 6. It does cook down quite a bit.

August 16, 2016 at 11:48 pmIs this very spicy? I want to make this for my son for a Christmas gift, as he loves soup in a jar mixes. But he doesn’t like thjngs that are overly spicy. Wondering if I could reduce the amount of cumin? He does like that spice, but 2 tspns, might be too much for him. Please advise. Thanks.

December 8, 2016 at 1:36 pmThis is not spicy in the way of heat at all. Cumin isn’t a hot spice. If he doesn’t like strong spice flavors, then you can definitely reduce the amount, but I like cumin!

December 19, 2015 at 3:48 pmHi Davida! I just made three of these jars for my aunts this past Christmas! Can’t wait to give them out. I want to make more but I ran out of onion flakes. Any idea what the sub ratio would be for onion powder…or if I run out of both, how it would affect the dish? Thanks!!

December 30, 2015 at 8:35 amI’m so sorry for the late reply, my dear! I was offline for the holidays. You can totally sub onion powder but I’d use about 1/2 the ratio of onion flakes. I wouldn’t recommend leaving them out as it would definitely affect the flavor. Hope you enjoyed them!

December 8, 2015 at 1:26 pmLooks awesome – thank you! So, feeling stupid to ask but do I just half the amt of dried onions and spices and divide them between the 2 mason jars then?
Just want to be crystal clear with my instructions as I pass these out as gifts 🙂
Thank you!

December 7, 2015 at 10:19 pmSo, like, I can just gift this for myself right? Currently avoiding grocery shopping since I’m going home Sunday, trying to live off my pantry items. Which are basically dry beans and quinoa. So this soup is definitely happening.
