The BEST Frozen Yogurt
I love me some frozen yogurt. It is a much healthier alternative to ice cream and can easily be customized to your liking. This Homemade Frozen Yogurt is no exception. It uses simple ingredients and excludes all the extra fillers you usually get from standard frozen yogurt manufacturers.
Frozen yogurt is a great healthy dessert that contains probiotics and active cultures that are beneficial for your gut. Plus dairy is also high in protein and calcium! With a little raw honey for sweetness, you’ll ditch the store-bought froyo or local menchies in favor of this frozen yogurt recipe.
Ingredients In Frozen Yogurt
- greek yogurt – either full fat or low fat are fine. I prefer to use Greek yogurt as it makes a creamier frozen yogurt. I stick to plain yogurt so I can add my own flavorings but you can use any flavor you’d like!
- raw honey – the natural sweetener in this dessert. For those of you asking I personally have not tried maple syrup or agave but if you do, please let me know in the comments below!
- vanilla extract – a flavor enhancer. See different flavor combo suggestions below.
What Type of Yogurt is Best for Frozen Yogurt?
Really any yogurt works for making homemade frozen yogurt, however I like using Greek yogurt because the end result is super thick and creamy.
I also recommend using plain whole milk yogurt so you can add in your own sweetener and flavors but you could try using vanilla or your favorite flavor for a shortcut!
Optional Variations and Toppings
The options are endless when it comes to mix-ins and toppings! I like adding fresh fruit or frozen berries or cocoa powder for a chocolate twist but there are so many possible flavor and texture combinations!
Here are some yogurt flavors or combo ideas:
- peanut butter + chocolate – add in peanut butter to taste (I love peanut butter so I would add at least 1/4 cup!) and 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder.
- PB & J – add in peanut butter to taste + fresh berries or frozen fruit or jam.
- peanut butter + banana – Mix in peanut butter to taste + 1/2 or 1 full banana, sliced.
- citrus – mix in 3 teaspoons of lime zest, lemon zest and/or orange zest.
- chocolate berry – add in 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen berries + 1 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
- blueberry lemon – add in 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries + 2 teaspoons lemon zest.
- strawberry banana – add in 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries + 1/2 or 1 full banana, sliced.
- mint chocolate chip – mix in 1 tsp peppermint extract + 1 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and/or chocolate chips.
What Kind of Machine to Use
You do need an ice cream machine for this recipe! We love our Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer Attachment but any ice cream maker will work.

How To Make Frozen Yogurt
STEP 1: COMBINE INGREDIENTS
Combine all of the ingredients (include any optional mix-ins) in a large mixing bowl or directly in your yogurt container.
STEP 2: ADD TO ICE CREAM MAKER
Pour the yogurt mixture into your ice cream maker. Churn for 35-40 minutes or until a creamy texture and consistency is reached with your ice cream maker. Be patient with this step! It can take a bit to get your ice cream maker to the correct texture (about that of soft serve consistency).
STEP 3: FREEZE
Pour into a container with a top and freeze for 2 hours.
How to Store Frozen Yogurt
Store any leftover frozen yogurt in an airtight container in the freezer for 1-3 months. It’s important to note that the yogurt will freeze solid when stored for longer than a couple of hours so I recommend thawing a bit before serving (typically a few minutes).
Note: there are no stabilizers in this frozen yogurt so ice crystals will form and that’s normal.

Ingredients
- 1 32 ounce container of plain greek yogurt (full fat or low fat are fine)1
- 1/3 cup raw honey
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- optional: 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen berries, 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder (for chocolate-flavored), or add-ins of choice (see list above)
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine all ingredients or mix directly into your yogurt container.
- Place mixed ingredients into your ice cream maker (I use the KitchenAid ice cream attachment)
- Mix for 35-40 minutes or until consistency is reached with your ice cream maker.
- Pour into a container with a top and freeze for 2 hours.
- Remove 5 minutes before serving to thaw slightly.
* I prefer to use greek as it makes for a creamier frozen yogurt

I also added to scoops of vanilla protein powder for a fabulous protein hit!

A recipe almost taylor made.. as in minimal ingredients, but I don’t have access to raw honey. Access meaning, pinching pennies cause mamma don’t have funds to purchase raw honey. It’s not healthy, but can granulated sugar be substituted for the raw honey? Anxiously awaiting good news to bust out the ice cream bucket and give it a spin.. and rock salt.. hmmm
